National Assistant principals Week

In the realm of educational leadership, the role of an Assistant Principal often stands out as a beacon of fulfillment. Unlike the Principalship, Assistant Principals typically carry the weight of leadership without bearing the ultimate decision-making authority. This dynamic allows them to flourish under the guidance of a Principal, creating a synergy that fosters growth and support within the school community.

Reflecting on my own journey, I've had the privilege of serving in various leadership capacities within the educational landscape. Beginning as an Assistant Principal in a large comprehensive high school, I seized the opportunity to hone my leadership skills and evolve into a more refined school leader. Dr. Brenda Mack, my mentor and Principal during this tenure, played an instrumental role in shaping my approach to leadership. Her emphasis on attention to detail and instructional leadership was pivotal, especially considering my background in School Counseling. Under her guidance, I transitioned from a novice Assistant Principal to a recognized leader in the field, earning accolades such as the South Carolina Association of School Administrators Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year and South Carolina’s nominee for National Assistant Principal of the Year in 2021.

Now, as the Principal of my own school, I have the privilege of leading a team of exceptional Assistant Principals, each contributing their unique talents and perspectives to our shared vision of educational excellence. As I reflect on my second year as Principal and first at my current school, I'm reminded of the invaluable support provided by my leadership team, particularly as we navigated significant transitions, including the arrival of two new Assistant Principals.

I am grateful to serve with these individuals. Each of my Assistant Principals have Principal leadership potential and my desire for them professionally is that together we will leverage and expand their skill set so that they can eventually lead their own schools.

Our Team is Growing

We are adding a dynamic addition to our administrative team next school year. This individual will serve our school in even more of an instructional capacity as they will be hyper-focused on what happens in every classroom daily within our school. I am excited to announce this addition to our faculty and staff in the coming days. I look forward to the impact we will make together within our school community.

Assistant Principals are the Heartbeat of the School

Assistant Principals can be seen as the heartbeat of the school. They keep everything flowing and their role cannot be diminished. While many people may see the glamour of the Assistant Principalship, I want to acknowledge the many countless hours that they invest with families whom they do not maintain a residence with. Your work does not go unnoticed. Happy Assistant Principals Week to Assistant Principals everywhere. I am grateful for the many great Assistant Principals that I have worked with and learned from over the years and I am very appreciative for the ones who have served alongside me during my Principal tenure.
